The most basic, but also the least secure, password storage format is cleartext.

• cleartext: unencrypted readable data transmitted or stored
  • Storing passwords in cleartext is the equivalent of writing them down in a piece of digital paper.

Hash function: a mathmematical algorithm that maps data of any size to a bit string of a fixed size.
